A while ago, there was a small thread about Jazz Clarinet music. I
think I finally found some...sort of.
I recently bought the soundtrack to "The Shadow" - an OK score, all
told. Anyway, there is a song written for a scene at a nightclub, and since
the time period in question is the 40's or 50's (I think), there are some
clarinet parts to it - there is a Clarinet "solo" part to go along with it (ala
Benny Goodman), and the Sax players double on Clarinet in some places. I think
there is even a Bass Clarinet part in there, too - either that, or else the
Bari Sax player was doing one hell of a Bass Clarinet impression!
Also, one question to go with it - the Solo Clarinet part starts out,
kind of like "Rhapsody in Blue" (starts out with a Clarinet bend), but the
beginning of the bend is in the higher chalameau register. It sounds TERRIBLY
weak - almost as if it were played on a Bass (thus, an octave higher and very
windy). There is very little of the lower frequencies present, and the whole
part during the song (written by Johny Mandel, BTW) is like that - very little
lower frequencies. There is also a little of a vibrato, as well. Is this an
"established" technique? Or is this "period playing"?
