It seems that there was a man who was out walking on the beach one summer
day. He spotted something shiny, and as he drew near, he saw that it was
an old beat-up lamp. Naturally curious, he opened it to look inside, and
out came a puff of smoke which materialized into a genie.

The genie said, "Since you are the one who has liberated me after
centuries of imprisonment, I am empowered to grant you three wishes."

The man told him that his first wish would be for unlimited wealth, and
that the second would be that he might be irresistably attractive to
women. (never mind that fulfillment of the first wish goes a long way
toward satisfying the second...)

Then he thought, "I really should use my last wish for something
unselfish, something that the whole world would benefit from." And he
asked the genie for peace in the Middle East. The genie said, "I've been
in this lamp for so long that I'm rather ignorant of the situation. Wait
just a minute." He waved his hand, and a world map appeared in it. He
studied it for a few minutes, and then vanished.

The next day the man was walking on the beach again, when the genie
returned. He bowed low and told him, "I'm afraid that your wish is far
beyond my power to grant. The situation in the Middle East is so
desparate that there is little hope for peace. Do you have another wish?"

The man said, "You know, there IS something that I've always wanted, but
never was able to find. I want an E-flat soprano clarinet that plays in
tune."

The genie thought for a moment and furrowed his brow. "Let me take
another look at that map..."

(Okay, when I heard it last month, the instrument was a soprano sax...)
