Yes, quite a few times in the "old days." In the mid-west and south in
the 1940's and 50's, it was not considered necessary or desirable to have
a different instrumentation for concert and marching bands. So, the
typical high school marching band was just a concert band which was
(relatively) mobile. I can't say that the alto and bass clarinets, or
even the occasional oboe or bassoon really added much to the tone of the
groups, but I know of some groups which had a really excellent
concert-band type sound when marching.
