If you want to talk about jazz elements in a clarinet solo with orchestra,
take a listen to _Concerto for Jazz Clarinet and Orchestra_ by Jorge
Calandrelli recorded by Eddie Daniels on his "Breakthrough" CD; published by
Theodore Presser. There is an entry about it in a book by:

Michael Thomas Roeder, _A History of the Concerto_. (Portland, Oregon:
Amadeus Press, 1994)

which, by the way, has a short entry about the Copland Concerto. [There is a
section in Chapter 26 (The concerto in the United States) called
Jazz-Inspired Concertos. Only nine pages long, but may be worth checking
out.]

Sections of each movement are to be improvised complete with chord symbols
(or can be performed using the written out solo by Calandrelli). It's a
great piece and worth looking into.

By the way, if you are or now of someone interested in performing it with
wind ensemble contact me.
