I think players worry more about intonation than listeners. The really important
places to match intonations are those where instruments are playing
together in parallel. On the works we've played through, there are
surprisingly(?)
few such passages - no doubt, composers who choose to write wind quintets are
aware of the problems. The listener's ear is far more tolerant of intonation
disparities when five quite different instrumental sounds are involved than
would be the case for a string quartet or quintet.
