Jo Rees-Davies once warned me about playing with a peg, because of the
difficulties in playing notes like written C (i.e., thumbhole & speaker only).
My own attempts to play with a strap convinced me that these notes are *more*
difficult to play that way. However, it seems likely that the slinging eye on
my (cheapo Noblet) bass is in the wrong place; certainly, the whole instrument
feels
dangerously unbalanced with no support from the bottom. A low C bass
presumably has a different weight distribution, so the problems are somewhat
different. Perhaps these eyes are primarily intended to support instruments
played on the march - this may apply to other makes than Noblet - and they are
in the wrong position for playing seated or even in a normal standing position.
