Great thread. I personally like the lower chalumeau on the bass
clarinet, especially the lowest E. Right now my community band is
playing Shostakovich's Second Symphony (Finale), and this range
is used quite a bit. There are points where it can be played with
a growly, menacing tone and give the music a feel of oppression
that really puts listeners on the edge of their seats. It's
completely counter to the "stereotype" (for lack of a better word)
of the clarinet as having a very sweet and mellow sound.

I really enjoy that part of the bass clarinet. Lets me experience
my inner homicidal maniac safely.
