I started this string by stating a preference for D below the staff. It
is my favorite note on the Bb clarinet. Neil Leupold asked if I preferred
this note because it had a different quality of sound relative to others
or if I liked it because of the pitch. It's a combination.

I prefer the sound of the upper chalumeau. Of these notes, D is the most
pleasing to me, so pitch must be involved. It doesn't have anything to do
with my own facility or lack of it in any of the registers. I respond to
the upper chalumeau sounds even when I listen to others play.

Incidentally, my least favorite tone is the third-line B. It's honky.
When I play scales, I feel like I enter the clarion register like Harpo
Marx. Then, once I'm onto C, the instrument begins singing again. Anyone
know how to de-honk a B?
