Well, I guess I constructed the ultimate "neck strap" I don't use it anymore
because I don't seem to need it. But someone having wrist problems might
be interested. I bought a harness of the type used for holding a camcorder.
There are two curved brackets that rest on each shoulder that in turn connect
to a bar that goes across the chest. From this bar I attached a cylinder
(also from the camera shop) that is about 1" in diameter and 3" long. It
mounts on the chest bracket and has a tripod fitting at the top end. I
glued a small rubber grommet onto my clarinet below the thumb rest. This
allows me to rest the clarinet on the tripod fitting. So all the weight of
the clarinet is supported against my stomach, and partially from the shoulders.
I created this device because I had problems supporting the clarinet from the
neck strap, as that put all the weight on my neck which I found uncomfortable.
The harness is a bit cumbersome, but does work well. It cost about $150 to
construct.
