As long as we're on the subject of supports, there was a device made
several years ago...probably would be classified as a waist support. The
instrument thumb rest was supported by this device. It was affectionately
referred to as a "Schmidt Stick" because, I think, it was invented by
Harry Schmidt, former clarinet instructor at FSU in Tallahassee. I heard
Prof. Schmidt play the "Rigoletti Fantasia" by Bassi once at an FSU
concert. When he got to the open "g" at the end, he sustained the note
while raising both hands in the air! Quite a showman, and all thanks to
his "Schmidt Stick"...which,BTW, the students called the "navel destroyer."
