Klarinet Archive - Posting 000781.txt from 1995/03

Upon finding and purchasing Phillip Rehfeldt's New Directions for Clarinet,
I stayed up until 3:30 practicing multiphonics in my garage. Many of you
probably remember my quest for information regarding multi tone tecnique and
fingerings. If you have any interest at all in multi tones than you should
definately pick up a copy of this book.
Besides various "avant-garde" tecniques, it gives a VERY concise
fingering chart and a very good bibliography related to new works. This
book also profiles the work of pioneers such as William O. Smith (Who played
with Dave Brubeck as Bill Smith) and many other modern masters.
I finnally did get a multiphonic at about 2:00 this morning. If I can
get one ANYONE can. Especially if you do a lot of jazz playing and have a
"looser throat". Remember however, this work deals with ALL aspects of
playing including many of the modern tecniques.
I, much to my surprise found the book in a very large bookstore in
Cleveland (it's Borders Bookstore as I know they are now national.) If
you cannot find it I would suggest contacting:
The University of California Press
The University of California, Berkeley
Berkeley, CA 94720
The work is entitled: New Directions for Clarinet by Phillip Rehfeldt. It
is a part of the New Instrumentation series edited by Bertram Turetzky and
Barney Childs.
Hope this helps,
