Mark plays with Opera San Jose, Midsummer Mozart, and the Anchor
Chamber Players, and is on the music faculty at UC Santa Cruz.
He is a former member of both the San Jose Symphony and the
San Francisco Symphony. He's also my teacher. He recently
soloed with my orchestra, the Nova Vista Symphony, performing
the Strauss Duett-Concertino with bassoonist Rufus Olivier.

On the bass-clarinet-in-bass-clef question, I recently played
The Sorcerer's Apprentice on bass clarinet, and the part had
a footnote (in French!) making it clear that the few treble
clef passages should be read up an octave. This made sense
given the surrounding notes. The same is true for the Franck
D Minor Symphony; the passages in treble clef clearly fit
better if read up an octave.
