Have you tried forcing the mouthpiece cover into the bell? If
you're playing seated, you can do this with your knee. Of course, it's not
a real solution. It's awkward, and it muffles the tone. But, it can be
done in tune with lip and knee corrections. In a pinch, it does work.
[Jack Brymer even mentions doing this on bass clarinet to get the low d in
his book.]
