I just recently had to face the problem of dealing with finding solo
repertoire for the bass to play for a Tanglewood audition. I ended up
transcribing the prelude to the Bach G-major cello suite for bass. I found
it to be a great excercise in transposition, bass-cleff reading, and
interval practice. I also played two pieces that were originally written
for solo clarinet. I played the Sutermeister Capriccio, and the Wilson
Osbourne (sp?) Rhapsody.
The one solo piece written especially for bass that I have worked on a
little is Donald Martino's Strata for solo bass clarinet. It is quite
difficult and has some extended techniques.
Some good sources for titles of pieces are Phillip Rehfeldt's New Directions
for Clarinet the catalogue for the Woodwind Service in Medfield, MA. They
have a couple of pages of pieces for bass clarinet. Their phone number is
1-800-52Songs (1-800-527-6647). I have never ordered from them, but their
catalogue is a great reference tool.
