I must reply to Michael Cassara's review of Frank Cohen's performance of the
Copland. He really did a wonderful job at the March 18th concert. I was
accompanying a group of 20 students from Mount Union College to the concert,
and sitting with them in the "student rush" section (front two rows). Up
close, Cohen sounded fairly airy (air leaks out the sides of the mouth??)
but he always sounds great from a distance. This seems to be a noticeable
difference between some orchestral players and recitalists. Get some
great recitalists in a hall of orchestral proportions and (no matter
how wonderful they sound up close) they are swallowed up -- and listen to
some orchestral players up close and you'll be amazed at the extraneous
noise.
