You want to talk "Swamp Monster?" I recently played bass in Stokowski's
transcription of the Engulfed Cathedral. He wrote in a part for BBb
Contrabass, which they got some guy to come up from Delaware to play.
This guy was about 6'4", and had to stand to play...the part either
doubled mine, or groaned out these awful low gurgling sounds, which the
guy couldn't get in tune to save his life. (Not that the instrument
helped him any...) I cringed behind my stand, hoping the audience wouldn't
think it was ME making those noises...
We borrowed the piece from the Phila. Orchestra. Supposedly our orchestra
was the first to play this piece in 30+ years. Now I know why.
