John Blegen submitted an amusing, but apochryphal story about Irving
Fazola. According to Blegen, Fazola bequeathed his clarinet to Fountain
and the horn smelled like garlic.

Pete Fountain tells the story differently. Fountain reports that Fazola
wanted to leave him his clarinet when he died at a very young age. But,
Fazola knew that Fountain played a Boehm. Fazola's horn was an Albert.

After Fazola's funeral, Mrs. Fazola appeared at Fountain's home and gave
him his idol's crystal mouthpiece. Fountain played the mouthpiece and
loved the sound. Don't know if this experience led him to designing his
own crystal mouthpiece.

This version is in Pete Fountain's autobiography, which is fascinating
book if you're interested in New Orleans, early jazz and clarinet music.
