All this talk of chrome plating reminds me of a passage from Jack
Brymer's book, _The_Clarinet_: he mentions the slick surface the plating
provides, and he also tells of how chrome plating can peel off. It may
actually leave jagged edges which can cut skin.
As for me, I never tried chrome plating, but I have had terrible
problems with nickel. First, I slide around on it. Then, after a couple of
months, I eat through it. Polishing the affected key helps, but only for a
short time. Then, it turns gray and chalky to the touch in the area where
the plating has been lost. Silver plating has solved this problem for me.
I don't slide around on it, and in nine years I have not worn through
anything. Tarnish has not caused a problem either because the silver stays
clean wherever my fingers touch the keys; occasional wiping keeps the other
areas bright [oh, bad word!] as well.
So, I vote for silver. Has anyone tried gold?
