Neil,

I see that you have received a number of authoritative postings
on Daniel Bonade, which should answer your question about his musical
lineage.

Although others on Klarinet know more about Gaston Hamelin than I
do, I can tell you that his most famous student was Ralph McLane, the
brilliant clarinetist at the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years.
McLane first studied with Vannini and later, after hearing Hamelin play at
the BSO, started studying with him. Of McLane's students, some of the most
prominent were Harold Wright and Dominic Ferra.

I noted with some interest in reading a biographical monograph
about McLane written by his friend, David Weber, that McLane and Bonade knew
each other rather well. McLane was invariably Bonade's preferred
vacation substitute in the CBS Symphony, which was conducted by Howard
Barlow, and McLane eventually inherited Bonade's position in that orchestra.
