Dear Linda: Many years ago when I was a second clarinet and bass
clarinetists with the Edmonton Symphony (Edmonton, Alberta CANADA) I used
to have similar urges. I loved the extended range of my Leblanc bass and
every year when we played a "Christmas concert" I would give in to this
urge and play the sing-along portion of the show one, maybe two octaves
lower than written. It was particularly rewarding during "White Christmas"
My colleagues grew to love these little whims of mine and dubbed my bass
clarinet affectionately as the "Swamp Monster" because they heard these
gorgeous low sounds rolling up from the floor of the stage.
