For all you performers on low C bass clarinets, have you ever been tempted to
play certain sections of orchestral works an octave lower from where the
composition was written?

Our orchestra is rehearsing the Stokowski arrangement of Bach Passacaglia and
Fugue in c minor, and there are some sections, by gosh, but the bass cl part
is scored an octave higher, presumably it (a regular bass cl) does not have
that range. There are one or two sections in that bass clarinet part.

For example, if you have access to the part, I 'm talking about three
measures before section 11 -- where it would have been logical to play that
low c#-d to follow the range of that line?

I have a really big sound in the extended range, and wow it's such a waste to
read as is...but I'll get over it.
