The following is a quotation from the notes to Beethoven's
"Trio, Op. 87" arranged for three equal clarinets by Wadham Sutton
(Novello, 1976): "Beethoven wrote his Trio in C, Opus 87, for two oboes
and cor anglais; it is known, however, that he was wont to perform this
work with any group of three instruments available to him at any given
time......."
Another worthwhile composition is the "Ballet Suite" for three
clarinets by Douglas Townsend (C.F. Peters, 1955).
I've performed both the Beethoven and Townsend compositions and
recommend them highly.
