Anred Previn once conducted an orchestra for a PBS TV broadcast program
which consisted of an open rehearsal with occasional explanations to the
audience. He told a story on himself: he was once rehearsing R.
Strauss' _Ein Heldenleben_, and told the French Horn that when their main
signature theme appeared towards the end, it needed to have a sense of
arrival, of triumph, a resoluteness, etc., etc.... to which a horn
player replied "you mean you want it louder?" Previn stopped, thought
for a moment, then sheepishly replied "yes, I guess I mean I want it louder!"
