I just stumbled onto a couple of papers in the physics literature
that might be of interest to some of you.

1)A. Hirschberg "Musical aero-acoustics of the clarinet"
Journal De Physique IV : JP
vol. 4, #5, page c5-559 (1994)
This is definitely a physics article but it is some what of a review
article too and lists 20 references.

2)A. Melka "Methodological approaches to the investigation of musical
timber"
In the same journal page: c5-569
>From the Abstract:
"Most of the difficulties with verbal determination and
quantification of the phenomenon called "timber" or "sound color" are
caused by the multidimensional nature of this perceptual attribute of
sound...."

They talk a little about the history (people have officially been
arguing about this since 1863) then give an example and some
statistical analysis on an experiment involving the sound quality of
trombones.
I looked through these papers quickly, the second one is definitely
more readable than the first but I really don't have time to read
ether of them carefully. If you have the time you might want to pop
over to your local university science library and take a look.
