This is the first time writing to the list for me, but I couldn't let
the conversation of Dan Leeson and "dark" versus "bright" slip past me.
I will agree with everything that Dan is saying. The use of these terms
are bogus and they do not have a definition to them. Last night I had
the incredible opportunity to hear the Warsaw Symphony in Ann Arbor, MI
and they were extraordinary. The clarinet players were commenting on
how they liked everything about the concert, but the clarinet player was
a little bright. How they could possibly say that, was beyond me! He
could play the hell out of the clarinet! He was amazing. His sound
concept was yes, quite different from some of us in the US, but
intonation and ensemble were quite amazing! So, what words do we use as
clarinetists to describe our sound? I like resonant, singing, creamy(my
favorite!), and as Dan Leeson says "what sounds good" to whomever is
playing!
