Strange you should mention this. Just last week, I took my family back home
to Mass. My 9 year old son, who also plays clarinet was supposed to pack the
instrument. Unfortunately he forgot the ligature. To make a long story short,
I found out that the thick rubber bands work quite nicely. In fact, I
discovered that I could play on a Vandoren #2 on a Vandoren 5JB mouthpiece. I
normally play a #3or 31/2. Since then, I have backed off on my reed strength
to a 21/2 and feel that there is a signifcant improvement in tone.
