For the most part, I think when people use the word "dark", they really
mean "tone that I happen to like." "Bright", then, means "tone I do not
care for." This tells us nothing about the actual tone which is being
produced, but at least it gets us into the ballpark of ascribing an
actual meaning to the use of" dark" and" bright". I think it might
be possible for some clarinetists who have similar training and outlook to
communicate verbally about clarinet tone. But the more diverse the
background of the players, the more it seems to me that the possiblity of
actually communicating something other than preferences does not exist.
