CALL FOR INSTRUMENTALISTS FOR RAGTIME ORCHESTRA

One of the features of the Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia,
Missouri, each year is the ALL-STAR ORCHESTRA, a pick-up group
led by David Reffkin. The festival this year will be May 31-
June 4. Instrumentalists are needed for flute/piccolo,
clarinet, cornet/trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin 1 & 2, viola,
cello, bass, drums. Registration deadline is May 15; send a
brief description of your performing background to Reffkin
at The Ragtime Machine, KUSF, 2130 Fulton, San Francisco, CA
94117. Violinists should specify if they prefer the second
(simpler) part. Because of the relative difficulty of some
parts, players of clarinet, trumpet, & 1st violin can purchase
the music ahead of time ($3, payable to David Reffkin). Other
instrumentalists also have the option of purchasing their
parts.

WORKSHOP ON PIANO RAGTIME FOR PIANO TEACHERS
In conjunction with the Scott Joplin Festival of Sedalia,
Missouri, being held this year on May 31-June 4, there will be
a piano workshop on playing and teaching ragtime, novelty piano,
etc. The workshops, being held May 30-June 1, are conducted by
two of the outstanding ragtime performers around today: Tony
Caramia, a member of the piano faculty at Eastman School of
Music; and John Arpin, called "the Chopin of Ragtime" by Eubie
Blake.
Registration for the workshop is $150; for the Festival,
$75 (reduced price for workshop attendees); undergraduate,
graduate, & continuing ed credits available through Central
