Subj: Wanted: Solo piece suggestion for Lent
Date: Fri, 10 Mar 1995 07:52:13 -0500

I have been asked to play an unaccompanied solo at church as a prelude
to the mass. It will be during Lent, which is why it is unaccompanied
(something about the idea of accompaniment being a relatively new
thing, i.e. the last millenium or so, and wanting a sparser music for
Lent). It should thus be rather slow, and definitely not very
ornamented. One thing that came to my mind was some kind of modern
piece written either based on, or in the style of, chant. I don't know
of any in particular but I am sure there are some. Another obvious
area is Bach solo sonatas. Any ideas?

I've just joined this list so please forgive me if there are well-known
on-line references for this kind of thing. Thanks for any help you can
give me.

Gary
