"It's so good to hear about a conductor who really communicates his love for
music both to the audience and to the players. I would like to see more of
this kind of joyful music making at the highest levels. For it is not only
quality but also the joy of music which keeps players interested and audiences
coming back for more."

David Gilman's comments above, in response to the dialogue I've been having
with Larry , bring up a very-much related subject. Finding a conductor who
openly demonstrates his joy for music and conducting with the ensemble is rare,
and it's doubtlessly a major point for the musicians in the orchestra because
the conductor's demeanor has an appreciable impact on how the players
themselves feel about the music they're playing. Perhaps an equal emphasis
should be placed on music educators, for in their case as well - the approach
taken to communicate with their students on the subject of music influences how
developing musicians at all levels (elementary, high school, college, and
beyond) perceive the art. I can still remember my awful elementary and junior
high school music teachers, and it's a wonder I had any desire whatsoever to
continue with it in high school based on the impression they gave my classmates
and I of what music is about. By the same token, my high school director was
so wonderfully inspired and inspiring, I couldn't help but to be infected by
his enthusiasm and obvious sophistication as a performing musician...
