I too am sold on the shoestring ligature. Different shoestrings produce
different sounds. To get a 'darker', 'intimate' sound I use a big fat
"sneaker" string. For a 'brighter', 'edgier' sound I will use a twine-
like round dress shoe string, and for a sound in between, I'll wrap the
reed with a 'common', average shoelace. Since all of these descriptions
are so subjective, I'd recommend anyone interested spend a couple of dollars
and experiment for yourself, or at least take your shoes off, set a spell,
and have a listen for free. David Pino (and all those German players) are
really on to something!
