Larry,
It's so good to hear about a conductor who really communicates his
love for music both to the audience and to the players. It reminds me of
another fine conductor I heard about not long ago named Edward van Beinum.
He directed the Los Angeles Philharmonic from 1956 to 1959, and people I've
spoken to describe him in similar terms: he really shared his enthusiasm
with everyone. He stood in stark contrast to his predecessor, Alfred
Wallenstein, whom some described as rather closed off. I would like to see
more of this kind of joyful music making at the highest levels. For it is
not only quality but also the joy of music which keeps players interested
and audiences coming back for more.
