Ok you guys, now this is getting really depressing! I hear all this talk
about Kaspar mouthpieces that were purchased before I was even born and
how they're sooooo superior. Arrrrgh, I'll never be able to get one
(unless someone sells me theirs...<pray, grin, hope>. I've heard my
entire clarinet playing career about how great these Kaspars are and how
I should always be on the lookout for them. So I get on the klarinet
list and it turns out that all kinds of people have them! Jeez! :) I am
currently playing on a Vandoren crystal A1 mouthpiece that I like a
bunch. I've got matching Yamaha 72 clarinets which are by nature
brighter than Buffet clars. so I had to do something to darken the
sound. The crystal mouthpiece did just the trick. Anyone else out there
use crystal mouthpieces? If so, I've got a little trick for you: I was
using a normal old Rovner ligature on my crystal and noticed that I
couldn't tongue very quickly, so I tried an Eb alto ligature on my Bb
crystal mouthpiece and ta-da! It totally opened up the sound even more
*and* freed up the reed to allow me to tongue much faster. Any other
tips for using crystal mouthpieces out there?

Chris
