Andrea,

---
Judging from the responses I've received, would I be correct in assuming that
improving my sax skills would be a good idea if I were to hope for a military
band job?
---
Not necesarily. It just so happened that this particular opening required
it. The C G Band is rather undersized, and doubling was a requirement in
order to help cover parts. The other service bands are pretty well
proportioned personnel wise, so if there is an opening for bass, you'll
probably not need to double.

That having been said, it is still a good idea for you to get some doubling
experience. You might need it in a civilian job some time. Keep an eye on
Newt in Congress. There is some gaffaw about the amount of money being spent
for military bands. If the Republicans have their way, there may not be many
new bass clarinet openings any time soon.
