Well, for what it's worth, here goes my opinion. (There's no accounting
for taste!)

On clarinet, I play the mouthpiece that came with my Selmer series 9*,
which I (actually, my father) bought new when I was in high school in
1964. It was refaced by someone that my college professor knew. I really
don't know much about the lay or anything, but I play #3 Plasticover
reeds on it. (Yeah, I know you purists are offended by plastic-covered
reeds.)

About 8 years ago when I started playing alto sax (I play a Selmer
Super Action 80) again after a lapse of far too many years, I went to a
local band shop and tried out a bunch of mouthpieces, including both
rubber and metal. I chose a Selmer C*. The guy who ran the shop said, "I
knew you'd choose that one." When I asked him why, he said, "Because you
have a legit sound."

A couple of years ago I decided to try some metal mouthpieces again, so
I ordered several different ones from (? can't remember the name of the
place - it's a well-known mail order place in New York). I didn't like
any of them, and went back to my C*.

I finally decided not to feel guilty about liking an open-chamber rubber
mouthpiece, in spite of the fact that all "real" sax players seem to
prefer those short little closed-chamber metal things. And, yes, I use a
#3 Plasticover on sax, too.

Like I said, there's no accounting for taste. But I wish I had one of
those bad note filters, too!
