I only use lip protection when I have not played for a few weeks and
am getting back in shape. After that I find that playing without one
I can better maintain my tonal nuance. The best "lip ease" I have
used was suggested by my saxophone teacher at North Texas, Jim Riggs.
He told me to go to Wal Mart and buy a football mouth guard, cut a
small piece off, boil it and shape it over my teeth. It cools into a
great cushion that has never worn threw. My clarinet teacher at UNT
said he uses corn pads or something like that (I never tried them).
