I have been playing alto in Ohlone College Wind Band for three years now.
I bought myself a Vito Student instrument, and a VanDoren B45 mouthpiece
with a Rovner ligature. I play on VanDoren 2.5 reeds. I definately
recommend VanDoren reeds. I also think you should be careful not to
play on reeds that are too hard; I find that backing off a little bit
makes my tone richer, fuller and darker.

And if you know you are going to be stuck playing it for a while, get
your own horn. It really helps knowing exactly what idiosyncracies
the instrument you play has.
