Andrea Hakari inquired about whether military bands have bass clarinetists
who audition specifically for that position. I can't say what is common in
other bands, but I am bass clarinetist with the Coast Guard Band in New
London, CT. The job was advertised for bass clarinet and tenor or bari sax. I
auditioned on bass and tenor, both of which I now play regularly. My duties
also include some soprano playing. Before this audition, the Coast Guard
rotated the bass clarinet among a few players who played it well.
Clarinetists from other bands my be able to offer details for there
particular situations.
