Neil:
My colleagues and I have used a variety of items for lip protection:
1) ungummed cigarette paper folded and formed over lower teeth
2) brace wax (good short term, long term, yecch!)
3) white cardboard
4) dental dam rubber ( this is the most tricky to use cause it gets
slippery!)
Find that when I have a long gig usually carry along a little bottle of ice
water, a temporary anaesthetic, just swish in the mouth and keep running.
Hope this helps!
