I've enjoyed the talk about the e fer and the love/hate relationship it
invokes. The alto clarinet really creates a love/hate relationship. I play
in the Tacoma Concert Band (Tacoma, WA) and when there seems to be an
important alto clarinet part(oxymoron?) I am pressed into service - much to
the relief of everybody else in the section. The only instruments available
are rarely used Bundys from smirking high school band directors who do not
seem anxious for its return. The last time I played I received great
attention and compliments about my tone quality and intonation. Was it
because I was using a Portnoy mouthpiece (which does make a difference) or
because the other clarinet players are praying that I remain the designated
alto clarinet(t)ist(rhetorical question)? If there is anyone out there who
can relate to me, I do have some real questions.
1. Is there any noticable difference in sound between less expensive reeds
and i.e. Vandoren alto clar. reeds?
2. Do people actually purchase professional quality alto clarinets and do
they make a difference?
