Sadly, the mother of our regular music director passed away two days
before the first rehearsal of Mahler 3. Clearly he was unable to devote
himself to the performance of the work in the light of his mother's death
so another conductor had to be found, and fast.

Within 24 hours we obtained the services of one David Stahl who is
conductor of the Charlotte, NC orchestra and the purpose of this note is
to tell all my friends in that area that they have a real star on their
hands. To walk into any orchestra to do anything on 24 hours notice
(he was first contacted on Monday night at 8 pm Charlotte time, and
24 hours later he gave the downbeat in California) is tough enough, but
that the work be the longest in the symphonic repertoire and maybe
one of the most difficult technically was really a touugh thing to do.

But Stahl was outstanding, the orchestra liked him very much, and last
night's first performance was a howling success.

Anyone else out there ever work with David Stahl?
