Canta Mais and Modinha, by Antonio Carlos Jobim, arranged for clarinet
and guitar quintet by Carlos Barbosa-Lima. When we played these works
last November, they were in manuscript form, with final parts faxed to
us from Carlos during rehearsals. Only way I can think of to inquire
about getting it is to contact agent for the Washington Guitar Quintet,
Lindy Martin (910) 295-3303.
>From program notes:
Canta Mais is a kind of tribute to Villa-Lobos, sometimes evoking the
feeling of the Bachianas Brasileiras. Modinha is a gallant, sensual song,
traditional in its form, which displays here the intensely emotional
feeling of a broken heart. Both works show the classical influences in
Jobim's style, with his unique lyricism which is always haunting and
highly expressive. In these arrangements, the clarinet has a lead role
and the guitar quintet, like a string orchestra, sometimes briefly
takes a leading role before the clarinet returns.
