I have a delightful Couignon which some band guy was going to throw in the
trash (along with two others, I took the best one) - evidently they were
"pretty old and needed a lot of work" - this was true, but I did the work
myself (should've taken the other two for parts!), and had one rod bent
by a professional. It's a dream, there is not an inherent intonation
problem that can't be fixed by the chops - and it was virtually free!

BTW, I am one of those people who CAN pick up a bass or an e-flat (or
B-flat/A) and sound good, chops don't kill me on e-flat, etc. Not
bragging, it's just a blessing, considering my gig. The one thing in the
world I hate most of all is Bass Clarinet Reeds...SO I've been using
(don't throw tomatoes) a couple of 20 year old Bundy fibercanes. The
resonance these reeds give, cracks and all, is absolutely amazing. I got
these things when I was in high school, just to "check them out." Being a
purist at heart, I've tried to switch to wooden reeds, and every time I
do, I have just as many reed problems as I would on B-flat reeds, so I just
go back to the good ole fibercanes. And I get more compliments with them
than you'd imagine! So I give up, it's fibercanes for me! Saves money,
anyway...(and reed aggravation :)
