Regarding transpositions:

I know for a fact that many of my horn friends in high school could
transpose from C to F without much difficulty, and I've always admired
that. I don't know very much about French horns, but as far as I know,
most people don't have access to C horns, D horns, etc. My transposition
abilities are admittedly below par. I've read a few Beethoven marches
and his _Christ on the Mount of Olives_ for C clarinet--only a whole-step
transposition, so it wasn't too difficult. However, I did end up
penciling in a lot of the transposed pitches. With C-to-Bb transposition
aside, since A clarinets are fairly available, I don't know if it is
extremely important to develop this transposition ability. It is a great
asset to one's playing to be able to transpose on sight, but is it
a necessity in this case? Most of my playing has been in Wind Ensembles,
so I don't have too much experience with transpositions, etc.--I'd like
to hear other's opinions on this subject as well.
