There are certain transpositions it seems [to me] reasonable
to ask players to be able to make:
1. Given a piece written in "concert" pitch, play it in the
appropriate key on your instrument;
2. If there is another instrument keyed "close" to yours, such
as "A clarinet" (when you play B-flat) or "E-flat horn" (when
you play F Horn) you should be able to take that alternate
part and transpose it to play on your instrument.

I don't know what the the professionals on this list would say
about this - and I'm interested in their opinions, too!
