Chris, I congratulate you and think that what you are doing is
terrific. I use my pc to do transposing for me and I'm very
comfortable with this action. No one that I know of expresses
the kind of concerns that you say you have heard, though I do
agree that in a live situation, when presented with music for which
you have not had opportunity to prepare, one should be able to
transpose at sight in almost every direction. This is specially
true for hornist.

But what you describe as your action appears to me to be harmless.
