Michael spoke of a company that appears to provide certain music that has
a clarinet part in it but recorded without that instrument. We used to
called that kind of thing "Music Minus One." Michael asked if any of
us had heard of the particular company to which he was referring.

I never heard of them, but that means nothing. They are probably a
reputable firm that has found a clever way to carry on an old tradition;
i.e., recording music with an instrument missing and then selling you
the version without clarinet. Michael said that they had the Beethoven
piano/wind quintet. They probably have it in four versions: without
clarinet, or without oboe, or without horn, or without bassoon. So the
version the clarinet player gets is different from the one that the
bassoonist gets.

It is a terrific idea and one that I used as a kid and even as an
adult. There weren't many titles, but I do remember the Mozart quintet
(for either A or B-flat clarinet).

By all means, enjoy yourself, learn exciting music, get the feel of
playing those particular pieces and probably with very good players.

The only disadvantage of the old music minus one was that the balance
was hard to maintain. But with modern equipment, it should be
terrific.

Thanks for telling us all about that Michael.
