Hang in there with 'saxophone'. If 'saxaphone' was EVER correct, it's not
now. It stands out like a sore thumb. (Maybe Kenny G plays a 'saxaphone". )
I've seen both 'clarinettist' and 'clarinetist' and I prefer the double ' t'
spelling: more class. Probably British.
