Subj: Re: H. Brant Concerto for Clt. and Dance Band
Date: Wed, 1 Mar 1995 16:18:39 -0500

About the Brant concerto:

Scoring:
Solo Clarinet
5 saxes (2 Altos, 2 Tenors, Bari)
(saxes double on clarinets for 2nd movement, Bari doubles on Bass Cl.)
2 bones (both Tenor)
3 trumpets (with a couple mutes, Harmon for sure, and maybe straight?)
Upright bass
Piano
Drumset

As far as the solo clarinet part goes, I think it's fully written out.
We rehearsed a few times with Bill Smith before performing it, and it
sounded the same for the most part every time. I was dying to get a look
at the solo part, but couldn't. I don't think the piece is published,
but I will try to find out. I think we played off copies from Mr.
Brant's original manuscript. He was there to watch, and came up on stage
to congratulate Mr. Smith on his outstanding performance. It ends, just
so you know, on a climb from altissimo G, tonguing A, Bb, B, and then
holds a C for a while while the band plays. It takes some work to figure
out what Mr. Brant is up to, with the time signature shifting in odd
places and the tempo changes, and having the solo clarinet there for
rehearsal is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to understand what Brant is up to.
Once the piece is understood, it's a great work.
