I have also heard about sealing the pores of a new reed. I do it by
rubbing the reed with my thumb on a piece of glass for a few days in a
row. I find that it keeps the reeds more consistent. I will also
sometimes smooth the back of a reed off with a piece of paper after
sanding it. I think this does the same thing.
